This building was opened by Indonesian president Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudoyono last week. The building aim is to give a memory of tsunami and also education center for citizen about tsunami.
ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology) lecture’s, Mr. M. Ridwan Kamil has won the design competition and Tsunami Memorial building is one of his masterpiece. This project was funded by BRR (Reconstruction and Rehabilitation for Aceh – Nias) and spent US $ 6.7 millions.
This building has a lot of meaning, the art of Acehnese life, relationship between human and human, human and God, etc.
Design Concept:
Acehnese House: Basically, this building architecture come from Acehnese traditonal house. THe advantage of this house are strong from disaster and challenge.
Escape Hill: The shape is like a mountain rescue, escape building from tsunami.
Sea Wave: To give a memory about tsunami.
Saman Dance: Acehnese traditional dance as a skin of the building, means the relationship between each other as a family.
The Light Of God: one cylindric room as a symbol of relationship between human and God.
