Mental Health Condition of Acehnese

Conflict for many years and tsunami has given a huge damage to Acehnese people. This effect comes inside psychological condition. Doctor Mulya Hasymy has conducted a research for this subject. And the result shows that more than 50% acehnese has mental health disorder. Depression 25.7%, panic 18.4%, tobacco dependence 16%, stresses 7.7% and alcoholic 1.3%.

In medical terminology, victim of conflict area has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This kind of mental health problem usually happen to people with many kind of horrible things, which is connected to them self, their family, their neighborhood, etc. War, kidnapped, earth disasters, rape and any other bad things has give sadness effect to victims. People no need to have their own experience, only seen the tragedy, could decrease their mental condition.

Tsunami in 2004 still imprints us, particularly for acehnese. They lost their home, family, job, lover, feel stress, depression, also acute mental health disorder. Based on information from National Statistic Center in 2005, around 1.8% acehnese has mental health disorder, its mean 62,785 people from total 4,031,589.

There are many things could be the cause of stress. The experience usually give a huge effect, social and economic also has contribution. Stress level can deeply increase when:

1. Unpredictable

2. Can not refuse

3. Urgent

4. Unusual / not ordinary case

5. Heavy

6. Uncontrolled

Stress Process

When the person becomes a stress victim, body turn on their bio alarm, body reaction goes to maximum; glucose, cholesterols and fat acid accumulation in vena; increasing blood pressure and heart beat. When glucose sends to brain cell, cholesterols level goes to top and cause many problems.

Long term stress could change normal function of body. Adrenalin and cartisol increase abnormally, this symptoms can cause premature diabetes, heart attack, hypertense, cancer, stomach inflammation, respiratory problems, eczema, psoriasis, even damage the brain cells.

The Symptoms

The expert clarifies the symptoms are:

1. anxiety and panic (feels that all the problems never end)

2. too much sweat

3. oral problems ( shaking when speak, difficult to speak)

4. insomnia (hard to sleep, nightmare)

5. Skin problems (acne, psoriasis, eczema)

6. stomach and intestine (digestion, dizzy, inflammation)

7. muscular problems (mouth stiff, backache, neck and shoulder problems)

8. infection (influenza)

9. migraine

10. hypertense

11. kidney

12. respiratory

13. allergic

14. dry mouth and throat

15. heart attack

16. less antibody power

18. not confidence and feels guilty

19. Confusing (disable to analyze, difficult to remember, hard to think)

So, what we should do to avoid stress??

But, when we can not run away from stress, we should:

Stress is something we can control, so when you are stress…..try to control it.
